September--Time To Get Your Mask On!

Okay, maybe it is a little early to consider Halloween and masks but for this month's challenge, we'll be using masks of another type.

Masking is "protecting an area from change during production". Translation: Covering an area with something so that when you're done painting/inking/glimmer-misting/stamping, whatever, the item can be peeled away to reveal a "masked" image. Heidi Swapp and Tim Holtz both offer masks that you can use over and over again or you can make your own. Stampers use masking to stamp images in different colors without overlap - the mask protects previously stamped images from intersecting with the new stamped images. Clear as mud?

For this month's challenge, create a project using a "mask". You can make a card, a scrapbook page, a project...whatever you like. And you can mask using whatever media you want (ink, paint, mist, stamps, chalks, spray paint ... you get the idea).

To get you started, check out my masking tutorial on My Creative Classroom.

I created this page using a masking technique:

I punched butterflies from scrap paper, masked with them using ink and Glimmer Mist, and then added more punched butterflies on 3D foam squares. To see the entire step by step tutorial, register for a free account at My Creative Classroom. Once you're there, take advantage of the free tutorials and check out the classes offered. I am teaching TWO classes this Fall ;).

Post a link to your project here in a comment on this post by 11:59PM (PST) on September 30, 2009. The Divas will announce a winner the first week of October. Good luck!! I'll post the prize I am giving away in a few days--it is Prima-liscious!
